Give Open Source Software a Higher profile On Dell.com

From InformationWeek.com : Open Source Quality Improving, But Development Assumptions Need Revising

This report confirms what open source supporters have known all along. Open source developers deliver very high quality code. As such Dell should be giving the open source developers it uses a higher profile on Dell.com instead of hiding them away in some dark recess out of the way!

At the very least give your own in-house open source developers more exposure! They deserve it after all the top quality code they've produced, tested and tweaked.

http://linux.dell.com is exactly the exposure our open source developers look for. We're the only engineering team I know of that has our own public-facing web server, with git repositories even. Not sure how much more exposure we really need. :-)

I was think more on the consumer side Matt. Seems such a shame to have you guys bust a gut to get Ubuntu all tested and working just to hide the Ubuntu machines in a little corner. But now you mention it. How visible is linux.dell.com? How easy is it to navigate their from the main page? Where's the link?

http://www.opensource.org/ labeled software needs to be options for the consumer at the point of sale. From (http://www.jackpicks.com/2008/06/open-source.html) type of initiative employs smart people. Back when computers were the only cost and software allowed you to make your own applications businesses had to hire smart people... Today these smart people develop software and SELL services customizing, implementing and maintaining these solutions. Open source is about solutions and to have more than one solution is to have CHOICE. That choice ultimately needs to be at the point of sale. A forum to talk is great, but until I can checkout with my Open Office install as easy as Microsoft Office it is all lips ervice.

How can this be marked as "ALREADY OFFERED"? What the poster is asking for is to bring consumer Linux onto the main consumer page instead of selling it along side server products the deep dark recesses of Dell.com. Basically put it somewhere where someone who doesn't know about Linux or Ubuntu can find it.

That is not what Dell is currently offering. You have to know where to look to get Ubuntu on a Dell.
