Optical mice only please

1390 points posted to Accessories (Keyboards, etc.) by falbert May 22

How come we can still get in 2008 mechanical mice. Come on guys, in 2008 there should be only optical mice available. Also please make it clear on the web site what people are purchasing.

Optical mice last longer and are easier to use (you do not need to clean out dust). As an added bonus, the lights are cool!

as long as you can get POWER to them... don't know how well they work with long extensions to a 16-port KVM switch...

I have an optical mouse that uses a USB port and because of that I have never had any power issues. Also, optical mice are not much more expensive than the mechanical kind are are much more responsive.

@falbert:

Thanks for posting your idea. I think one reason why it may still be an option is that there are many die hard users that want and still prefer the option to purchase a mechanical mouse. Is there a negative in your eyes for still allowing the option?

Thanks!

Chris, there are diehards that prefer CRT screens too (I think winoffice was one but can't remember for sure). Is Dell going to offer those too? :D

I NEVER preferred CRT screens jervis961...what are you talking about??

Optical mouse is very useful. And it have no problem with balls. And it is weightless and it is easily movable.

I said I think it was you winoffice, obviously I was wrong.

Well, at least we know you're still reading the thread, WO! :-D

I would venture to guess that there are probably still enough people purchasing trackball mice to justify keeping the option available. ;-)

@falbert: You mean add "Trackball" to the description of the default mouse made available?

Mechanical mice are a thing of the past. They get dirty, need cleaning often, and are very inaccurate.

Mice should always have a cord though, batteries STINK and are bad for the environment.

BTW im a diehard CRT user as well :)
LCD refresh rates are bad for gaming purposes, and "good" lcd monitors still cost over 500$.. more than i'm willing to spend on a monitor that's just flat..

Well, bbr, I really LOVE my cordless. Working against that physical connection is a constant pain. And mine have a recharging cradle, so I'm never left without power.

Well, gamers can play for long and irregular hours. A cordless mouse is a big liability.
And batteries degrade over time.

I only use my systems while at work... for about 10 hours. The 3 mice are likely good for at least a couple of days, but I recharge them every night. For the 10 hour run, there's never been a problem. I _did_ have to replace _one_ set of rechargables in the past 6 years.

I can see the positives in having and using optical mice, I do as well. But is there any harm in still providing the option for those that want to keep it old school? =)

simply can see no reason NOT to provide the option unless it's simply more economical for Dell!

i'd say make optical mice the standard but keep a downgrade option

I'm with jdelidc but Dell will most likely keep the old mice as the standard option. Sure its only $10 or so but people look at price first and that is what Dell seems to be looking to grab them with. Low price to hook you in and nickle and dime you to death on the way out.

I like the option of the mechanical mouse for 2 reasons:
1) I already have a high-end mouse so will only use the bundled mouse as a spare anyway. If the mechanical one's even a penny cheaper, I'm happy with it being mechanical.
2) The mechanical mouse is an interesting and cheap source for the sensors that some electrical/mechanical engineering type hackers like to use to make alternative input devices.

If you have a high end mouse wouldn't you want to opt out of buying another?
jmxz

Yeah - unless it's crazy cheap like Dell bundles sometimes are ($0 ?).

OK that makes sense.

Just because dell give you the mouse for free, doesn't mean the total price couldn't go down if you opted out of it.

Sure, but it's nice to have a spare or two around in case one breaks.

keep it as a standard option for low end systems...
