Simplify Customization Process

-210 points posted to Dell Web Site, Service and Support by delfmeek May 18

There are too many options when ordering a PC/Laptop. While choice is a good thing, I do not understand why Dell offers several memory configurations. The last time I ordered a desktop, I had 8 choices of memory configurations, for 1, 2, 3, or 4 gigabytes of a memory. I could get the 1,2,3, or 4 gigs of memory in 667 or 800 Mhz of memory. Why in the the world would I choose the 667 MHZ of memory, when less than $50 seperates me from the 800 MHZ option? eliminate the 667 MHZ memory module option, and just simplify it. I hate to say it, but Apple's website is super easy to configure---use that as a model.

have to demote: do not remove such options. When ordering computers in batches, those "minor" price differences make a huge difference, e.g. my company orders 20 computers, that $50 per unit difference comes out to $1000 we can save by buying slower ram, and the end user will never know the difference.

Have to demote as well. Having all the options totinker with means you can get a pc closer to what you the consumer wants. Having a list of simple pre-built machines means that you may have to pay more for a desktop that doesnt suit you because you cant build the one you want.

I am uncertain how to vote on this idea. While choice is a good thing, the configuration process could be streamlined. The big problem with the current process is that the typical user doesn't know how his choices will change the performance of his new machine.

I will also demote as usually on Dell's website you have a few standard chioces, so if you want ease of chocie take the one mostly suits you and go into customization only if you really want to change somthing you dislike. An alternative might be to have a two step approach. I.e. when you choose to customize you get to a simple page which offers you the basic "Apple-like" choice. This page would feature a "give me more choices" button which would lead to a "Dell-like" choice pages which offers as much choice as todays page.
