Add USB port 5V supply to Laptop Powersupply units

410 points posted to Laptops, Laptop Power by michael.schwarz May 14

Today a travelling laptop user has often additional mobile devices which are charged by the USB port like Music players, mobile phones, PDA's etc. To charge these the Laptop unfortunate must be switched on. If the Transformator/ power supply for Laptops would have an USB power supply connector, - devices could be charged indendent from running the Laptop. (e.g. at nigth in Hotel)

I experienced such capability some time ago by an third party Power supply and found it very valuable.

If this would be added to Dell Laptop power adapters it would offer and added value to the today mobile Users.

While you are at it, perhaps send a USB signal back from the laptop to the power supply, and make the power supply into an actual powered hub. That way, it can charge things like you request, but also work as a hub, should you need one. I have found that for my work, I often need to have just one or two more USB devices attached than I have usb ports on my laptop. (Or that a port goes bad, and then I run really low.)

I would not want this feature at the expense of added weight or bulk, though.
