8GB of RAM capacity on M1730. C'mon Dell, you already offer it in Precision M6300

Please make posible upgrading to 8GB of RAM on the M1730, and also offer 64 bit Vista so we can really take advantage of the memory. I mean, 4 GB is kind of new, but 64 bit applications are starting to emerge and soon 4 GB wont be enough, Vista uses 1 GB or something like that so you are only left with 3GB, thats pretty much the same you can use in Windows XP. If you can already make 8GB laptops (precision M6300) then upgrade the M1730 so that we can really start taking advantage of 64 bit apps.
By the way, Alienware Area 51 laptop already has a firewire 800 port, that could also be useful in the M1730, it's really hard to capture video to an external drive if you only have one firewire port.

I definitly think that Dell needs to do something as consumers crack the 32-bit/64-bit boundary on ALL systems. So I think that they also need to make 64-bit operating systems available on all their systems. Even the Dell OpltiPlex is capable of 4GB of RAM but not all of it is going to get used. This is a complete waste of money for consumers and businesses.

I just found the same idea, only that it doesn't center on M1730, the idea is called: 8GB and up for Laptop and is suggested by "cperng" I totally agree on the comments supporting that idea. Please Dell make it possible. I really have use of the 8 GB of RAM for audio production (plug ins can fill up the memory pretty fast) and also for video production, you will really make things easier for all the people working in multimedia and also for gamers. Make the leap to 64 bits a step before, you already know that is the tendency and every major software company is now starting to change. Go ahead!

Although I think Dell should offer the 8GB option, the problem right now is mainly that is an EXTREMELY expensive option like what used to be the case going from 2GB to 4GB on a laptop just a couple of years ago. If there are laptop motherboards with four memory slots around, then, and only then will 8GB be a realistic option.

Yep, I have always said that if Dell upgraded the XPS M2030 I would be the most happy man and with that notebook there could have enough space to fit a motherboard that supported 4 slots for RAM. But the M2030 doesn't seem to be a good computer for many people, I really don't know how do DELL they intend to do the 8 GB upgrade in the M6300 but if they already have that posibility, then fitting that sort of motherboard in the XPS or in any other 17 inch laptop should't be imposible.

Please comment if you demote, I don't mind if you disagree with the idea but I would appreciate your opinion

8GB almost sounds like a dream lol. I agree Dell needs to get into this new RAM market and fast or it may lose out on valuable customers looking for power beyond our imagination!

Good news & bad news, i receive today my 2*4Gb kit form the precision M6300, the max memory actually is 6Gb ( 1*2 + 1*4) that is much better than 4, the good nes is the bios count up to 6, with the 2*4Gb the bios start but stall, i will wait taht only a bios Issue, it was not bloked at 4Gb like many others.

You can buy easely 1 sodimm it works.

Thank you very much Paul, I was really interested in getting that info to know if theres expansion because its going to be really useful in the near future. I really appreciate that you took the time and the risk of experimenting and informing. Dell should take a note on this one. By the way, may I ask you which operating system are you using on your M1730?

Hi Kanoneno

I run vista 64bits and use the A08 bios , since the A07 the 8gb of memory is supported, i bought the memory at DELL the kit of the precision M6300, in term of risk it was a minimum one, because the XPS m1730 & M6300 is based on the same architecture and intel supports up to 16Gb , after just a question of Bios.

But the A07 will be out very soon 8 gb will work, by the way the memory that i receive the the kingston one with Dell stickers on it for the warranty.

By the way, any suggestion concerning where to get all those 64 bit drivers out there? I've heard terrible stories about how messy it can get looking for the drivers one by one
