Stop Advertising Windows Vista On Your Linux Pages

380 points posted to Advertising and Marketing, Dell Web Site by aikiwolfie May 11

A while ago I noticed the Latitude XT promotional demo video in the Linux section of the Dell community page. And questioned it's relevance then. In the open source page on Dell.com Dell is still trying to steer open source users back to Windows.

The Latitude XT is a Microsoft Windows only product and is not offered with Ubuntu or any other form of Linux so far as i know. In fact the demo video shows the Latitude XT running Windows Vista. Please stop badgering open source users and stop hounding them with this Windows Vista nonsense. We've already decided we're not interested.

Fair is fair...they should put the same thing on the "non-linux" product pages for Linux.

winoffice, even gamers, who'll normally snap up any new technology that will give them even the most meager improvement in graphics and performance won't touch Vista. It's nonsense. The only people buying it are people buying new PCs. Even then Dell along with the likes of HP, Lenovo and Asus, has found it necessary to exploit a downgrade loophole in the Microsoft Windows Vista EULA.

So if people who actually want Windows won't buy Vista, why are Dell advertising it on their Linux and open source pages? Advertising to people who don't even want Windows at all? That's just desperate. And all the while Linux is increasing it's market share with next to no advertising at all.

I notice their Ubuntu XPS M1330 page now says "Dell recommends Windows Vista® Home Premium".

I seem to recall it was not there on the old E1505N page. Perhaps Dell gets enough page views on the Ubuntu pages to make it worth running the ads there. Wonder if they pay extra for running the ad on the Ubuntu pages.

The bottom line is Microsoft are getting desperate and are strong arming all of their "partners". But it just doesn't seem to be enough. Linux has practically gained a foot hold in the consumer PC user space, in hand helds and portables, laptops and mobile phones. It is a fragile foot hold that could still be dislodged. But it seems to be getting stronger all the time with more companies jumping on the bandwagon. Dell, HP, Lenovo, Asus and Nokia are just a few of the companies now selling consumer targeted Linux based products.

I predict in the next few months we'll hear some more saber rattling about patent infringements all the while talking about greater interoperability with rival products.

I think it's time Dell faced facts and stopped playing Microsoft for easy money. People want Linux.
