14.1 xps laptop

170 points posted to XPS products, Laptops by theideasman Apr 25

There is a slight gap in the xps range of laptops.
- 13.3 ultraportable m1330
- 14.1 portable performance ????
- 15.4 Home use m1530
- 17 Desktop replacement m1730,m1710
- 20 Desktop replacement m2010

A 14.1 portable performance laptop would fill in the xps gap nicely. It would be ideal for work or college users such as my myself who need performance above an 8400m gs but still want to maintain portability. It would be a good premium alternative to a latitude or vostro.

Yes but the extra inch of space may mean they can fit better components into it than a 13.3. Ive seen very powerful 14.1 laptops out there. What puts me off buying a dell at the moment is that they have no standout powerful portable notebook.

I can see where you're coming from too. I dont want a market crammed full of obscure sized notebooks, its just pointless. 17" is the perfect size for fitting all the top components in a laptop. Look at what dell did with the m1730. Dual 8800m gtx, physix card and a core 2 extreme!
However 13.3 isnt the perfect size for fitting top components in a portable chasis. 14.1 is. Asus have fit the 8600m gt and the new 9500m gs in their 14.1 laptops!

Why not get the 15.4 then? Too big? Or what?

In my opinion it is too big. I may stray to the m1530 as ive heard that they are very light for their size and quite slim. However it would still be nice to have a portable, powerful 14.1 notebook. Its not the weight of a 15.4 or the thickness that really botheres me, its their width. Thats not to say they're not portable, they're just not as portable as id like being that i have to carry it around with me 9 hours a day.

You can only go up to a 8400m gs in the inspiron 1420. Thats just not enough for someone like me who needs to run demanding graphical applications on a daily basis.

I agree completely. The 13.3" screen size stinks...the 14.1" is 10 times better.
