INTERNAL USB port replicator connector with power 140 points posted to Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops by cav0711 Apr 25 I think there should be a universal option on dells for a usb docking station. Yes, a docking station adds cost. It would be an option, one that could be added later or while the system is being purchased. It could use a pin type connector, like most have now. Ive heard the issues, that you would have to make a new system board and that adds cost and the like, but thats not the case. They make USB port replicators, but the problem with those is they do not power the system, and its still a mess to see a wire on your desk instead of a clean dock. The way this can be done is simple. In all laptops, make a small space where a card can be placed in the computer that connects via USB, but not using the typical usb connector, make it a hardwired type connection that plugs in almost like a piece of memory or other card would. Then some of the pins could be routed to the power receptor. This way you would have a docking station, and since it is USB powered, docking stations could still be made model specific for different options, however the basics would always work, no matter the computer. This also helps eliminate frustrated customers who wish they purchased a specific model over their current one because theirs does not have a docking station. This way they feel confident that they have not made an error in choosing the model, or even the brand. Also it helps reduce costs on the models that have docking stations because people may opt out of that option knowing they can upgrade later, which makes for a more attractive offer to customers who need business class machines at a lesser price.
