Parts & Spares and compatibility

200 points posted to Dell Web Site by pjb1008 Apr 24

When trying to get accessories for Dell laptops (eg. docking station, external CD drive etc), it is difficult to work out what I need to buy - I get lots of results back, but I need to go into the description of each one separately to work out which one is appropriate for my laptop. I want to enter a service tag, and then see only the compatible equipment.

Where there are funny connectors involved (eg. the double-height USB+power connector), that should be made clear.

It needs to be clear how the different parts relate to each other (eg. which of D/Bay, D/Port, Media base, laptop stand, monitor stand do I need?).

Adding everything that could possibly go with each system would be an enormous amount of work. On the other hand, I know what's it's like to look for what you want, and not find it easily. I would like to see the menu to the right inside the description:
Email to a Friend
Print-Friendly Version
Compatibility
What's in the Box
Click to Call
be placed in the initial description that results from a search. That way you could type in "Docking Station" and when you find one you want to check out just click the compatibility link and you never have to leave the search results page just to rule it out or include it. I know the compatibility link isn't there for all products, but it should be, that would make it so much easier.

Or just go here: http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/DellPartsFamily.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=dhs
Click on Parts for your Desktops & Laptops, choose your system, and go. I know... It doesn't provide all the possibles, which was what I was addressing in my last post; ALL products having a list of systems it could work in. I really wish Dell would take their website down to the most basic, simplistic form. THEN it would be a nice, easily navigable site for most users.
