Fixed Power Plug

40 points posted to Desktops and Laptops by cuessaroupa Apr 21

The power plug on the new desktops and laptops should have a lock way like RJ45 or RJ11, according to my use of the laptops and desktops, sometimes our work goes "down the drain" because I moved the laptop and the plug goes "away"

please note this is in direct opposition to a very popular request, "Use magsafe power connectors".

MAGSAFE is probably already with rights reserved for Apple...

Well, matt_d, sounds like there are customers on both sides of the issue. Options? Choice? Alternatives (accessories)...

Desktops might want a lock, but for laptops, wouldn't just keeping the battery in act as an uninterruptible power supply and fix your problem?

Well seems like you have never had problems with the batteries. You know that some laptops after 1 year with bad use have 5min long of batterie life. An uninterruptible power supply you can't travel with it... that would not be reasonable.

it would. but to go on the other end of the arguement (not the side i'm on though), leaving the battery in once it's charged will shorten it's life (thanks to the heat) so i always pulled mine out and ran off of AC power only, but plugged into a full size UPS just in case. and lost stuff when the cable fell out

Cuessaroupa, I do know what you're talking about with the batteries -- my current battery for the laptop I have used to last 2.5 hours, now it only lasts a half hour. And jdelidc makes a good point about heat. It should be an option to select when you build your system. I bet it's so popular on the macs because most mac owners don't even know how to take out their battery -- I've never seen a mac battery taken out by a mac owner, or heard of this happening.
