Offer an option not to have a webcam on the XPS M1730

130 points posted to Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Sales Strategies, XPS products by winoffice Apr 17

I have NO need for a webcam and I am not about to pay for what I will not use. Could you at least offer the OPTION to opt out? While you are at it, make the M1730 better looking...offer an optional design like the Inspiron XPS Generation 2.

I see your point snider.. But, I feel that changing the M1730's style would be a very big error.. And he included that piece of information. I cant ignore it. If he wouldnt have included that, I would have promoted this without hesitation. But to me its more important to preserve the style it has, because, I just got mine and its a beauty. I hope it continues to be that beautiful for the sake of DELL.

I want to demote this idea only because it introduces an additional cost to Dell in that now they must have 2 screen bezels. One for webcam, one without. The webcam can be turned off.

But since I like winoffice, I'll refrain.

Good point okroger. And from what weve seen from DELL in the last few weeks, it seems things like these that would cause them to have more varieties would be against their current efforts. It really is a shame, but it is the truth of how DELL is going forward right now.

It's how everyone is going now. Going back to how it all began in the PC world. Default configs. In a way, it'll help to increase reliability since there would be less to test or assume. Beisdes, didn't having options like colored lids bite Dell in the rear last summer as they couldn't make estimated ship dates because of quality control issues with certain colors? It's a gimmick anyway. Only choices that really need to exist is hard drive size, graphic card and perhaps a choice of 2 resolutions.

Turn off the webcam? I don't want it at all!

It would cost more in labour for a $20 option to sometimes add/sometime not have that small web cam. By standardizing the small amount to always yes, they reduce the overall production cost, and for the majority (I believe) of people who chose one, the price drops by a handfull of dollars vs. an optional process.

If every computer was exactly the same, price goes down (Ford: "You can have any colour, as long as it's black"), Dell has very configurable machines, so I have no problem with them streamlining a $20 option to standard.

Note, US price as option is likely 30% cheaper. I'm quoting off the inflated prices Canadian site. :-)

I'm with canadaboy it would cost you MORE to have the option to not have a webcam. Options are nice but not always cheaper.

I promoted because, like I said, options are nice. I can see it costing Dell more to provide both options, HP is most likely eating the cost.

HP sells more preconfigured than configured notebooks. All preconfigured come with a webcam.

Plus many times a year, on HP's site they offer an inducement to get you to buy the webcam/mic/fingerprint combo. Plus the option to opt out of a webcam is only on select models. Not all.

Best bet, just turn it off.

I mean, hey, like many other people, I never have nor never expect to use a 1394 firewire port. Should we ask Dell for the option of opting out? Why or why not?

From my POV, 1394 firewire is a "waste of space.' Would be nice to have another USB port instead. A VGA port is from my POV, a "waste of space" also. 2nd headphone jack? Never use it. S-Video? What for? Mic? I don't use skype nor use my computer for dictation.

Where is the line drawn on opting out?

LOL. Why is it an exaggeration? I do not and have not used any of those things on my notebooks, ever. But the same point applies to the webcam, how do you know you won't use it? I have no need of a webcam, but it seems kind of funny to me that someone would want to save maybe $20 on a $2500+ system. If that makes or breaks, one might want to consider buying something cheaper altogether.

If you want Dell feedback, it already exists. There was a news release early this month that states that Dell is looking to roll back much of their customization in order to... control costs and increase margins. Dell wants to scale down from having over 1million possible combinations to a few hundred thousand.

stormrider451...but why demote an OPTIONAL design???? I said that the Gen 2 design would be OPTIONAL, so you still could get your 1730 design.

canadaboy...webcam people might be paying less, but I still would be paying for what I will not use. As I do not want webcams, I don't care what webcam people pay, because I still am paying for what I don't use.

I thought this topic died. :D

Anyway winoffice what they were saying was it would be more expensive to supply cases with and without webcam holes. The end result would be for everyone to pay more so you and maybe 1% of the other buyers can have no webcam.

But then OS choice is more expensive than offering only one OS, yet you probably support OS choice.

Well the 1394 probably cannot be removed as belonging to the system board or expansion cards; same with S-video, VGA etc. But the webcam CAN be removed...Dell does after all offer the option on other notebooks, why not the 1730?

I watched one of Dell's videos on youtube and they are citing the standard webcam as one of the selling points of the entire XPS laptop line so I don't know if they would want to take it out. But, I do agree, that if you are not going to use it, you should have the option to take it out.
