Enforce the age limit on Ideastorm during REGISTRATION

210 points posted to IdeaStorm by phubert Apr 14

Since there has been a -small- flap over the age limit for IdeaStorm participants,

ADD a "birth year" choice to the registration submission form, and at that point inform those "under 18" of the restriction.

This would end any questions or confusion after-the-fact.

Just drop the age limit to 13.

they most likely can't due to the implicit (possibly explicit) legal contract involved with joining.

apparently, they would have to rewrite other portions of the TOU... and don't intend to do so...

ciitroentech, btw, was bounced for age (as I understand it)

Even if they dropped the age to 13 they should still add this to avoid confusion from those under 13.

Citroentech was a valuable contributor too. Shame. Wouldn't have guessed that he was under 18. Smart kid. Bright future ahead.

I don't know how to vote on this one. Enforcing the age limit upfront and we might miss someone valuable like Citroentech. But then again, he's exceptional for his age. That other debacle with the mom cheerleading her son was just nuts.

Well, they _could_ lie, okroger104, but it was citroentech who suggested this and he thanked me for submitting it on his behalf.

and, jervis961 is right: whatever their age standard, it would help if they 'enforced' it upfront.

@phubert & jervis961: agreed

Well, according to the TOU, if you're under 18, and admit it, you will be removed from the site.

seank1995: I agree, but unfortunately I am afraid that I know what Dell will do to you for saying that.

Oh, I agree... this suggestion, however, is only to highlight this particular part of the TOU Dell seems determined to enforce.

My only point: better up front than later.

I would RATHER they _re-wrote_ the TOU for IdeaStorm so the limit would not be necessary.

After all, there are some amazing kids far younger than seank1995 (not many of course) who would likely leave most of the rest of us in the dust. I think it would be a valuable experience to have any like that joining the group!

I'll add my vote for seank1995 and any others who participate well, no matter their age!

Why allow them to be a part of Ideastorm while restricting what they are allowed to do? For example, they are not allowed to start posts but can vote and comment but with the understanding that if they are reported for abuse more than twice, they will be banned. This restriction will only be enforced until they turn 18 and they will have the ability to use the site like any other member.

@joyscant1980
that would more over defeat the point of letting them share ideas posting an idea would be better then letting them comment the comments are where i could see it becoming more of an issue easier to ban someone posting idea after idea then read every idea seeing someone posting what ever kinda of off topic childish flaming ect just a thought.... and yes my grammer is bad i dont really care though.

does anyone know of a legal reason that the ToU cannot be a accepted by a 13 yearold other then the fact that it says that could some county that dell wants to accept users from not allow it?

@tekhawk, one legal reason is the fact that a 13 year old is incapable of entering a contract. When you registered to become a part of this forum, you entered a contract with the webmasters of the site, the terms of use are the terms of the contract.

@joyscant1980: Partailly correct, a 13-yr old child cannot enter a contract without parental/guardian permission. It would be easy to add an "If under 18 please have your parents approve by entering and confirming their email address" or something similar. Many sites had it when I was younger.

mkmaster78 - you might want to consider adding that comment (if you haven't already) to this thread: ****

"teenagers have excellent ideas and understand computers. "

I agree entirely..
I would MUCH prefer that Dell FIND a way to include teenagers in IdeaStorm.
If Dell believes it can provide solutions, why can't they solve THIS one??
