DELL XPS M16 Renegade

240 points posted to Broadband and Mobility, Gaming, XPS products by icarus75 Apr 13

Inspired by the XPS 16-inch concept at CES 2008, but thinking about something a little more powerful, I'm hoping for a perfect blend of mobility, gaming, and native 16:9 high-definition viewing.

Everything sounds cool.. Only thing I dont think might be possible is the: "Nowhere near The Beast" weight. Its going to be hard not to make it heavy with the specifications you have there. Its going to be lighter than the beast because its 16 inch but... nowhere near it? I dont think so.. But who knows, im not a computer engeneer or anything hah..

Therefore, if its going to be big and bulky anyways, why not put all those specs on the 1730 and go with it? Having the extra inch in the monitor (TO ME AT LEAST) is more important. I mean, whoever expects to have a laptop with that kind of power thats light and easily mobile is asking too much really. Maybe in a few years when things keep getting smaller and lighter.. But right now, I think its going to be very hard to do so. Anyways, I think these new beastly computers are mobile enough. I mean, try moving a desktop to your friends house like ive done several times and youll see how mobile this laptop is; this computer you can fit on a bag and take it anywhere no problem) .

But hey, dont get me wrong, if they can make it a lot lighter by doing it 16 inch, then by all means, do this.. But I just dont see it possible. Would rather have the 17 inch screen.

I'm going with a 16-inch because it's a Native 16:9 Full-HD display featured on the new Acer Gemstone Blue and the Dell XPS prototype. There is also an 18.4" version, but to me a 17" is max. You could sell an 18.4" version - ie the Dell XPS M18 Renegade, but that's outside the portable category IMO.

Also, I believe you could get this all in one machine, there would be only 1 HD bay, and 1 graphics module (non-SLI), and I would anticipate a near-the-top 2nd generation GeForce 9 series would have enough of a size reduction to be similar to an 8600/8700 GT. The only increase in space would be for a cooling solution (probably air) for a C2D Extreme/GeForce 9, the integrated TV Tuner and GPS Module (both of which could share antenna resouces with the Wireless module).

The XPS M1730 is wider, deeper, and thicker than the M1710, and it starts at 10.6lbs. Battery Life with and 8800GTX SLI is about an HOUR! The M1730 is a portable desktop, not a notebook. The M1710/9400 at least fit width-wise on most planes, and cutting an inch of depth (From the difference of 16:10 to 16:9) would help it clear the "downright" position on airline seats.

Many of the requested features are not available on the XPS M1730, how will they be available on this one?

Part of these specs are anticipation of 9 months from now (Q1 2009), so that's part of why this isn't available in the M1730.

Except for core gaming upgrades, I would argue the M1730 is behind the times. No HDMI (1530/1330), no DisplayPort (implemented in several Dell monitors), no eSATA (Gateway/ASUS), and no Firewire 800 (Alienware m15x / MacBook Pro). Sure, C2D Extreme, NVIDIA SLI and AGEIA physics is huge for gaming,

But what about playing games or streaming HD movies off a nice Lacie Bigger Disk Extreme via FireWire 800 or eSATA? I hate 4-pin Firewire 1394a, it's archaic and it's not powered. FireWire 3200 has been ratified - it works with existing FireWire 800 cables, eSATA's been around for awhile.

The new Dell Latitude-E series will feature integrated GPS, improved Lithium-ion batteries, and more LED options.

I really believe Dell could get close if they pool some advancements from other product lines and other companies.

I agree with you completely, 7.0 lbs at most.

According to the requested specifications, the 16" XPS would be more powerful than the 17" XPS! That makes no sense.

Winoffice: the XPS M1740 or 1840 or "The Beast on Human Growth Hormone" of next year would look something like this:

CORE SYSTEM:

- Intel® Core 2 Extreme QX9500 Unlocked (Overclocked to 3.20 GHz, 12MB L2 Cache, 1066 MHz FSB)

- 8GB Low Latency DDR3 1066 SDRAM (2 x 4GB SoDIMMs)

- 320GB: DUAL160GB SATA II Solid State Disks – 2.5Gbps RAID 0 (256MB/s Write, 320MB/s Read)

- 18.4-inch Full-HD 1920 x 1080p LED Display or 17.1-inch 1920 x 1200 LED Display (MacBook Pro)

- 4GB NVIDIA® SLI - DUAL 2GB GeForce 9900M GTX's with Triple Monitor Support (1080p x 3)

- 11.4lb Chassis WITHOUT 4.8lb 16-cell 35-minute Battery AND 6.0lb 350W Power Brick (Joking)

Jeez!! lol.. my dear god.. I just purchased a 1730 a week ago.. I cant believe how fast its going to be put to shame!! haha :P

How sure are you of this 18 inch XPS M1840? Man that I would have liked.. An extra inch on the screen of the M1730 I purchased. I usually like more than 17.

I'm not sure at all about an XPS M1840. It's speculation based off the (Samsung?) 18.4" 16:9 Full-HD panel found in then Acer Gemstone Blue series. The QX9500 would run stock at the same stock speed of 2.8GHz as the current X9000, and would replace the 1st-gen QX9300 running at 2.53GHz.

I'm sure we'll see dual 9800M GTX's with 1 or 2GB memory before Q4 in the M1730 (or M1740). So, the 4GB 9900M GTX SLI is a bit of a gamble, but who knows. The GeForce brand might be replaced, or we'll see GeForce X8, GeForce X80, or even GeForce X800 (sound familiar?).

SSD is also a bit of a gamble, but 128GB drives are about to come on big, and I'm sure a slightly faster, slightly larger version would be possible in the early new year.
