Specialized systems based on how they are used

140 points posted to Dell, Sales Strategies by jervis961 Apr 10

I know Dell is cutting back on specialized systems but it is what makes them unique. I think they need to expand on the concept when dealing with government agencies and other large orders that have unique uses that may require more than a stock system.

Take for example public safety which uses notebooks in vehicles at times. Government in some states have been trying to cut costs wherever possible but still need quality equipment that works well in the field. While Dell would love to stick them with a stock system such as the Latitude XT it just isn't justifiable to spend over $2500 per vehicle across a fleet. Dell could work with such an agency to discover what is truly important to them and come up with a solution that meets the need at a reasonable price. Since agencies constantly compare technologies it would most likely lead to more contracts once word gets around.

"it just isn't justifiable to spend over $2500 per vehicle across a fleet. "

No? Then why are they happy paying $28905 and sometimes much more for similar from General Dynamics?
And yes, governments get them for entire fleets, like the 1800 Florida got. Ruggedized laptops tend to be pretty expensive.

Also, it seems Dell already does this - noting their FAA Dell/Linux/Google Apps project.

the top technology official at the Federal Aviation Administration revealed that he is considering a permanent ban on the Microsoft software in favor of a combination of Google's new online business applications running on Linux-based hardware.

...
Bowen said he's in talks with the aviation safety agency's main hardware supplier, Dell Computer, to determine if it could deliver Linux-based computers capable of accessing Google Apps through a non-Microsoft browser once the FAA's XP-based computers pass their shelf life. "We have discussions going on with Dell," Bowen said. "We're trying to figure out what our roadmap will be after we're no longer able to acquire Windows XP."

Actually the article stated they bought 1736 of them and the cost starts at $2895 for the semirugged notebook. Buying in bulk may have saved them some money and how long ago was that as the article didn't say. Funny that You would mention Florida Highway patrol since Florida is one of the states cracking down on costs now. The state passed new property tax reform which will effect how much tax money local governments will receive now and in the future. Since the passing of the reform agencies across the state have been trying to find ways to cut costs. While FHP will not be affected by the changes local departments will and that was more to whom I was referring to.
