How IdeaStorm Works:

The IdeaStorm SITE should be consistent with moderator POLICIES

160 points posted to IdeaStorm by phubert Apr 4

When I select "Post an Idea", I'm THEN presented with:

Post your news article"

Moderators DELETE submissions that they say are not "ideas", but the submission page _specifically_ references something entirely different.

What is it, Mods?

Yep. I, like many before me, have just had a "non-idea" deleted, But, the WEBSITE tells me to "Post your news article" ... interesting contradiction?

That is too funny phubert. I recently noticed that when I go to recent ideas the web address says articles and the tab it is in says recent stories.

And, the Top IDEA Makers" list COLUMN HEADING is "ARTICLES Submitted"!!!!!

Isn't this like having the moderator's actions contradict the TOU???

Our Commitments

Moderation – To foster a real-time and free-flowing discussion, comments will not be actively moderated by Dell. The site will be moderated by the community, and users can and should flag any materials that don’t fit the site guidelines. The site manager also will retroactively remove postings that violate the rules of engagement. We will do our best to respond to comments – where appropriate – in a reasonable timeframe. We expect users to provide their own input and responses, as this site is a forum for ideas and is not designed for Q&A with Dell or responses to specific customer questions.
Topics – We will not hesitate to address tough issues or challenging topics, but will do so in a measured, thoughtful fashion. There are some topics, however, that are not appropriate for the IdeaStorm forum and will not be maintained on the site – political issues, sensitive financial matters and topics unrelated to our business and industry, for example.
Due Diligence – We will consider the most popular ideas, as selected by users, and review the suggestions for their business potential and viability.
Updates – We will update users on the status of the most popular ideas and any product or business developments linked to user ideas and comments.
Conduct – Our corporate values and policies will guide what we say – and how we say it. In line with our Dell Code of Conduct, we are committed to acting in a professional, transparent, accurate and ethical manner in all situations – with our customers, business partners and neighbors. Dell also subscribes to the Code of Ethics of the Word of Mouth Marketing Association. All comments and interactions on IdeaStorm by Dell representatives will follow these guidelines, and Dell has the discretion to remove posts by others that are not in line with these guidelines.
Privacy – We are committed to the confidentiality of personal information, and your privacy will be respected. Information collected for registration will remain strictly confidential.

***I DON'T SEE HOW DELETING AN IDEA WITHOUT WARNING FITS THE ABOVE COMMITMENTS. :D
That isn't supposed to be yelling just making the comment stand out against the quote. Kinda hard to do without proper tools like a real forum.

"Conduct – Our corporate values and policies will guide what we say "

And, THIS is exactly why I've continued to WONDER just what their "corporate values" really ARE.

Yes, Jervis, I've used caps for emphasis, since there's no way to easily underline or italicize or bold.

And, just because it has been called "shouting" in chat, doesn't mean we have to accept it AS that, since at least a few of us have been first trained in an experienced with _format writing_.

bweed posted this link in stormroom.

I'm so tempted to write a comment but I'm also cranky today (back on night shift again).

Glowing, huh?

So, do you think we're mere malcontents, mostly to be ignored?

Morning guys, thanks for pointing out the text error. We are working to have that resolved.

It's in a number of places, apparently... but jervis961's quote of Dell's "Our Commitments" raises questions as well, vis a vis what Moderators actually DO...

PHubert and Jervis- I know it is Friday... and perhaps my brain is just not working... but I do not understand. What part of the commitments do you not think we are keeping? Thanks for the clarification.

I'm thinking this part. "To foster a real-time and free-flowing discussion, comments will not be actively moderated by Dell. The site will be moderated by the community, and users can and should flag any materials that don’t fit the site guidelines." combined with "We will not hesitate to address tough issues or challenging topics, but will do so in a measured, thoughtful fashion."

Even if phubert's idea was reported as abuse by someone who thought it wasn't an idea, someone could have asked for clarification. Phubert doesn't always word things with the idea flashing in neon but when you read the entire post you can understand what he is looking for. If Dell just deletes an idea because they feel it isn't worded correctly then the poster loses all the votes and has to start over hoping that the same people will promote it again. The current process isn't very "measured" or "thoughtful".

Indeed. I have worded submissions with the idea more implied than stated, and the very fact that rewording the original submission MAKES it an idea seems to indicate either a lack of attention on the mod's part or a devotion to 'the letter of the law'. In other words, form over substance.

Still, they may be doing me a favor by forcing me to state things more directly (I suppose).

But, I agree with jervis, dawn, The portion he quotes above, to me, is in some conflict with what we have seen at the site from Day 1.

Who recently posted (again) a suggestion that 'rejected ideas' be responded to? Not unlike my request for an "Acknowledged" status to say "Yeah, we really DID see and READ this one" which, to me, is FAR better than what we see now: COMPLETE SILENCE.

Hmmm... and it seems I can't even FIND that submission... was it, perhaps, deleted or merged??????
phubert

(Heck, I might even have ASKED it to be merged! :-D )
jervis961

I guess they find it easier to delete your implied Idea and make you start over than to ask you to submit a reword for them to fix it. Maybe this is a side effect of the removal of the edit function from our ideas. :D
jervis961

I found your idea it was merged at your request.

I knew I had asked for that on something... I'd just forgotten on what! Thanks for finding it.

Don't thank me thank google's advanced search. You can specify that you want to perform a search on a specific website. Unfortunately this website is really 2 in one (www.ideastorm.com and www.dellideastorm.com) so even that isn't perfect. It is still much better than the seach function here.

I still say they should buy cosh's site, too bad he took it down.

I hadn't realized that Salesforce.com was some supposedly significant industry site... saw some articles about it since, but STILL don't quite get it... anymore than I do SAP!!!

Since you found that, jervis, think you can find a good place for me to post the following as a comment...

LOL, we'll see. I just watched the video demo for SalesForce ideas. It is advertised for Spring of 2008 and lets just say I'm not impressed. They do have a video clip of Caroline on the website though so I guess she is still alive.
