Gadget Rack for SOHO

150 points posted to Accessories (Keyboards, etc.) by pallayyab Mar 31

If you were to look at typical house these days you will find several devices. Some of them could be

1) A modem from cable company
2) Router
3) A network Attached Storage
4) VOIP Phone

There could be lot more even in future. Placing all of them in a single place is ugly. Often time due to reasons , you have to place them in living room which is way too ugly.

What I am dreaming about is a gadget rack (Like a rack you people develop for servers. 1U 2U etc) . This gadget rack is a shell rack with power and network sharing. This rack does not do anything. You sell standard 1U gadgets (Router, VOIP, NAS etc) separately which will snap into this rack without much effort.

All the devices will be designed with a standard dimensions possible. These devices draw power and internet from the rack. This rack should be visually pleasing. This way I will not have multiple cables hanging around. I can upgrade my gadgets any day separately

A smaller form factor rack of the Standard 1U, 2U, etc. is a good idea. Figure on using the same height factors as the standard but making it much less wide for these smaller components. Also include some options for a remote antenna location on the top for the wireless router configurations or even try to design the rack itself to act as an antenna. This idea could go quite a ways if someone really sat down and worked out the specifics. Especially if you could incorporate a hot swap feature for some predesigned "slots" that would act more in a docking station function for cable connections and power supply. Have it include a built-in power supply too. That way you could buy specific components that don't need all the cables and power cords. This could be a whole new line of quick-swap components. Wish I could promote it more than once!
