Rip off the UK

340 points posted to Dell Web Site, Sales Strategies, XPS products by d3fcon Mar 31

Dell,

Can you explain why you charge £855 for a 64GB SSD hard drive upgrade in the UK ...when its at $655 on the USA site. That equates to approx $1700 thats almost 3 times the cost. I understand there are shipping costs, taxes etc... but 3 times the cost thats laughable ....any explanation???

Ripping punters off in the UK is the thing to do since it's so easy ;op Everybody else does it. Why should Dell be different?

It's not only the UK... I was really considering a M1330, but after I saw that the base in US is $1000 and in the Czech Republic about $2200 I was so disgusted that I went with Asus... especially taken to consideration that the average income is about $1200 here

Import taxes play an important role here...
The Aussies and kiwis also face the same problem... unless Dell opens manufacturing unit in your country, it will continue to cost more than the US counterpart...

UK PCs are manufactured in Ireland so far as I know. I think the factory is in Limerick.

Thats almost 3 times more over here (Those Irish really do have a pot of gold)...

Or is it the fact they are ripping us off.... aren't the SSD's bought in from samsung and aren't they manufactored in China?...must cost $1000 per SSD to get it through UK customs and don't forget the 17.5% they have to add on for tax....

BE REALISTIC it doesn't cost any company 3 times more to manufactor the same product for different countries or they would just re-locate production to the country with lowest cost (low production costs more profit ;>) ...and then just have distribution from ireland....Are the components actually made in Ireland or is it just an assembly line ie take laptop push in samsung SSD and charge 300% on cost in USA???

I believe they are just assembled in Ireland... It's a rip off no doubt, the question is only how much are they overpricing....

Assembled ... manufactured ... same thing when it comes to PCs. We're all on either Intel or AMD CPUs, with either Intel, NVIDIA or ATI graphics Kingston RAM, an NVIDIA derived system board and Sigmatel sound with a Western Digital or Seagate Hard Drive. It's all the same. Dell just put their name on the box.
