A Media Vault product like the HP 2100

160 points posted to New Product Ideas by jmxz 03/30/08

The HP Media Vault 2100 is a very nice little box.
From the article

Why, in the midst of a major Windows Home Server push, would HP introduce a little Linux-based NAS at half the price? And why would HP make the $300 Media Vault mv2120 so full featured and easy that its $600-and-up MediaSmart Servers look
A) too bulky
B) too expensive
C) too overloaded
D) all of the above?
Is HP telling Microsoft there's no need for Windows Home Server, especially in light of its recent troubles?

Dell - please sell something like this. Especially if on top of it you also could stack external hard drives designed to fit nicely on top of it. Also note that the HP is not too different from some earlier IdeaStorm ideas like this and this.

Maybe HP are reading IdeaStorm and implementing the ideas Dells consumer base are asking for? We've asked for this from Dell. HP have also been involved with Linux for a long long time. Notice that most HP printers will work with Linux by default, yet Dell so far as I know have yet to get one single printer working with Linux.

@aikiwolfie:

Indeed - with HP handling a couple of the top-voted IdeaStorm Ideas, and Sony having recently
implemented another, I'm optimistic that our time here is well spent. Even if Dell never addresses the top dozen Ideas here, it seems the other vendors are eager to.

I do note that users from HP.com do indeed read IdeaStorm.

Well if you're not happy with the standard bag of tricks Dell are offering, it's time to shop around. Considering the current state of the UK web site it might be better to look somewhere else.

I do shop around every time - but keep coming back to Dell in spite of their software. For home/personal purchases their coupon codes often make them more competitive than the competitors; and for work, we've had excellent experiences with racks of their servers.
