Clean up the place!!

350 points posted to IdeaStorm by jervis961 Mar 25

Dell has added more help to the site but the place is still a mess with many duplicates and non-ideas. Allow us to be able to concentrate on original ideas by clearing the clutter.

Delete the non-ideas and merge the obvious duplicates (not just close) to bring down the total number of ideas. While you are at it any idea that is older than 2 months and still has a negative score should be considered for deletion as well. Dell could put them in a new category (call it "possible deletions" or something else) for a week to see if the community objects and if they don't, then get rid of it.

On a side note: Why do we have so much wasted space on this site? The blank areas on either side are huge, Spread the text out to fit more information on the page. The banner at the top is a big waste of space as well that eats up about a 1/3 of my monitor space and could easily be made smaller.

@jervis: We are working on doing just that, cleaning up the place!

@hillsborospartans: If an idea is deleted, an email is sent to the author of the idea to advise of this. If an idea is merged, an email is sent to advise of the merge.

I know you are jackie, I was just bored and going through the old ideas. I reported abuse on some of the non-ideas and some of th ones that need a status tag. There are still many many dupes though, the search stinks so I stopped trying to report them.

I've also been getting the same three ideas as possible duplicates when I submit a new idea, so you might want to check that out. It seems the search doesn't just look at the idea but the comments as well. Some of the ideas have so many comments that you are bound to find just about any key word in them.

I don't see a need for deleting ideas with negative votes. They'll just drop off into the bowels of IdeaStorm of their own accord.

Why clog the site up with them? There are so many ideas that could be consolidated or deleted which would make it easier to find ideas worth voting and commenting on. Try starting with the recent ideas tab and going to the last page to the oldest ones. Read through them for a few pages and tell me how many of the old ideas you have not voted on, but did vote on the duplicate.

hillsborospartans - do you have multiple email accounts? Perhaps you haven't looked at the right one?

@jervis: "and still has a negative score should be considered for deletion as well"

And even that it generous; allowing ideas with less than 10 people supporting them to remain as well.
Perhaps the threshold should be any idea voted under 100 or even higher?

Ideastorm actually looks pretty clean and interesting when only looking at ideas voted over 300.

Deleting ideas means that users will not find them when searching for duplicates, and will be "encouraged" to enter the idea once again.

jmxz - I figured people would freak if I went that far. :D

bardley - Perhaps you could word the negatively voted idea better and it will be a hit.

The search feature is so FUBARed a spell in the Betty Ford clinic wouldn't fix it. They need to totally start over with that thing. Maybe get some decent OSS code.

Several times my own ideas got deleted (on the claim that they were "non-ideas"), even when they did have an idea. I do not want such an incident happening to me again.

Then word your ideas better. :D

I understand, no argument on your point just a joke. What are you doing, playing catch up on my old ideas?

Shouldn't this idea be PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED by now?

Nah - I think with some of the really absurd merges (like the laptop idea being merged with a desktop/printer combo idea), "Not Now" would be a better status than "Partially Implemented".
