Remote hand-shaker

-230 points posted to Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), New Product Ideas, Desktops and Laptops by doctorcox Mar 22

Computer users are presently able to communicate digitally and via voice and video and but no "tactile" communication is provided. This suggestion is to add a new I/O device as standard equipment to ALL desktop and laptop computer keyboards; an 8-way joystick where one person manipulates his/her joystick while another person feels the exact movements--in real time. In the send mode you would manipulate while the other feels your movements in the receive mode you feel the movements. Incidentally, the joystick would replace the arrow buttons and serve double duty as a traditional joystick.

This is a type of virtual reality. How would you like to shake hands with the President using the remote joy-stick? With this functionality you could actually "feel" someone else manipulating the joystick in your hand.

The "remote hand-shaker" is just a novelty to introduce the concept. The functionality could facilitate everything from very personal communications to remote "surgery" and other robotic-like functions by interfacing physically or digitally with the joystick. Ideally, all sorts of peripheral devices will be created by Dell and/or other third party developers. Someone will create the "killer app".

The framework would be owned by Dell giving them exclusive control over the commercialization and licensing of the concept.

What's wrong with them funky VR gloves and helmets from the late 80s, early 90s. Can't say I'd go for this product. Sorry.

I agree with aikiwolfie, such a keyboard would be too expensive and ugly. I cannot agree with this idea, and I would probably not go for this product.

VR from the late 80s to early 90s. We even had TV games shows using it

All sorts of initial uses for this idea come to my mind:
As an additional "twist" to instant messaging; handshaking could be a way to increase the personal touch.
In business the "handshake" could be used as a "super" security feature. I.e. your handshake pattern could be distinctly recognizable only by another human.
Gamers could use the functionality to compete in a scenario where users A & B are required to simultaneously provide input to achieve a goal.
Surveyors could use the handskaker to remotely communicate with each other in aligning their instruments.
Where machines or equipment needs 'fine-tuning' by highly trained individuals the handshaker could be used as a method to remotely convey adjustment instructions to inept individuals.
Then there is the infinite number of specialized uses where peripheral devices could be used that would allow remote handshaker services ranging from having someone paint your fingernails to remote controlled @ex.
All that is needed is for someone like to Dell (or Apple) to make an investment by providing the infrastructure. The returns could be substantial.

OH my God! I just thought of the 'killer app' for this functionality... too good to share.

A distinct handshaking pattern? Has it been proven there is such a thing?

Sounds weird... I dont want to shake hands with the president...
And i dont really think it would feel all that convincing, its only a joystick.
A gaming joystick built into the keyboard would be a better idea.
