Highlight Words Dell Doesn't Like!

250 points posted to Dell Community, IdeaStorm by aikiwolfie Mar 17

For whatever reason Dell has taken it upon it's self to include unoffensive every day words in it's naughty words list. As I don't find these words offensive I'm often left bewildered and bemused as to which word it is that Dell are taking offense to.

To minimize frustration please highlight the "offensive" word or phrase when a post is rejected.

It would be good to have list of words that are not ok. This idea even better.

yea, i was surprised when the forum wouldn't let me post "sucks" or "crap" and couln't for the life of me figure out which word it was blocking

that's the part that surprised me. if it's blocked in one place, it needs to be blocked everywhere

The list of words that cannot be used on the forum is waaay to long to write. I think that they are working on a combined language filter for all of our Global Online Communities. Soon you will not be able to use the words listed in the above post.

Consistency is always good in these matters. But all I want when a post is rejected is for the word to be highlighted. It would make life so much easier.

hillsborospartans - um, no, you can't. just because there is not a fully developed filter for ideastorm doesn't mean the terms of use do not apply. thus the email from the moderator saying you can't use those words.
i agree with akiwolfie that some clearer definition of what constitutes vulgarity, profanity, etc would be helpful, but to use profanity just because you can get away with it is banal schoolyard mentality. "hey, the teachers not looking. lets say dirty words heeehee."

I completely agree that we should not use profanity anywhere on the site. However, aikiwolfie's idea is still valid. When something will not post because the language filter is tripped, the author should be made aware of what is tripping it so that they can easily correct it.

ah the sweet irony of being called a "kid" by someone who uses their high school mascot name as a user name. thanks for the laugh.

Come on man the most zealous American Fundamentalist Creationists aren't even offended by someone of the words Dell has banned. How can a bad word filter be so long it can't even be printed? That's just stupid. Taking all the languages in the world there just aren't that many swear words.

i think he was exagerating.

anyways, dell website=dell rules. i'm just being realisitc about the situation. but seriously, do you really need to use curse words or other words dell has deemed offensive to express yourself? i mean, i understand if you're a kid or something - it's like smoking; maybe the other kids will think i'm cool. i for one have never had a problem getting my point across on ideastorm or in the DCF without using curse words.

bweed I don't need to curse to be expressive. It's the other harmless words we don't even think about that leaves us stumped when a post is rejected. It's very frustrating and wastes too much time. There's no point in telling someone they've said the wrong thing if you don't tell them what it is they have said that you're taking offense too.

aikiwolfie - i agree with you (as previously mentioned) about dell offering better clarification on what constitutes unacceptable language and what does not. i was not directing my previous comment at anyone in particular, so please don't take offense.
my point is, dell gets to decide what is acceptable on their websites. if michael dell decides he finds the word "monkey" offensive, then that is that. if you don't like it, you can start your own computer company, and your own forums and let people cuss up a blue streak. arguing the point is useless.
i'm not necessarily saying i agree or disagree with it, nor am i a prude regarding foul language. i'm just saying dell makes the rules in dell land, end of story.
btw this has been discussed/argued ad nauseum on the DCF.

hillsborospartans - what, they don't have google where you live?
i notice the post you used a swear in is now gone. it appears you indeed can NOT use curse words, even if you can slip it past the filter.
one other thing - can you please elaborate on what you mean by dell being "racest"?
