Remove stubid welcome text.

210 points posted to Dell Web Site, Linux by smarsen Mar 8

The first thing a costumer reads when entering Dell's opensource pages is:

The main thing to note is that when you choose open source you don’t get a Windows® operating system. If you’re here by mistake and you are looking for a Dell PC with Windows, please use the following link.

Remove this stupid text. It sound like something is missing on a computer without commercial software. The main thing is that you get a freely available OS with free worldwide support (community) and loads of free software installable simply also for dummies.

Most people do want Windows. This makes sense to me.

I disagree, It is there so people make sure they know they are not in a windows os. This is primarily for the general public and not the techy person.

the opensource page is so out of place it would pretty much go without saying its not windows.

It would be better to have a link that says.

About Open-Source Products

with a description that describes the OS's Programs has screen shots etc.

Quite a few people want that text removed, myself included. The web page authors have been approached, we'll see how long it takes to get it resolved.

I like yaknowwhat's point. Reworded (shorter!) would be fine and a link. The wording definitely has an ominous overtone. Like if you don't buy a Microsoft OS, you're somehow missing out.

Duplicate. And, if I accidentally click the link while looking for Windows PCs, then why shouldn't I be given the link to get back to what I was actually searching for?

I agree with zanlok above. Most Dell customers are looking for Windows PCs. With that in mind, it makes sense to include a link if they are on the open source page by accident but in reality are looking for Windows PCs.

You really don't want Ubuntu, I'm sure you came here by mistake. Please be a good, obedient M$ <s>drone</s> consumer, and buy Windows instead.

@winoffice: Most people are looking for windows pc's because they think that and Mac is all that exist.
Accidently clicking the link isnt all that easy. If they keep it there at least reword it in a nicer manner.
Same Concept when you go on a windows desktop page do you want to read.

" Not sure Windows is for You?

The main thing to note is that when you choose windows you don’t get a Ubuntu Linux operating system. If you’re here by mistake and you are looking for a Dell PC with Ubuntu Linux, please use the following link. "

@champ: though somewhat overboard, yes, it is funny

Perhaps now that Dell sells Solaris they could change it to

"The main thing to note is that when you choose open source you don’t get a Solaris® operating system."

or, maybe "you don't get a UI behemoth"   :P
