Dell Remote Access Card in desktops and laptops

140 points posted to Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops and Laptops by jarv Mar 5

Would it be possible to start installing DRAC type cards in desktop and/or laptop machines? With the DRAC you can remote control a server before the operating system (i.e. at the BIOS level). This would be very useful for fixing fairly low level operating system problems for remote users. Obviosuly normal remote control software requires a fully working operating system.

whats the security risk on a non firewall connection like a cable modem w/o a router?

more info on DRAC for those interested... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dell_DRAC

Not quite sure what the security risks would be. To use DRAC in a server you have to provide a username and password via the web interface. Aside from that a non firewall connection wouldnt matter before the O/S started I wouldnt imagine?

Sounds a good idea. I'm sure that Dell could integrate a DRAC into their bios initiated via a hot key or something. Use a remote web browser on a PC to connect to the remote unit.
