Take the whole anti-vista resistance thing and exploit it

110 points posted to Linux, Operating Systems by lee_stricklin Mar 4

Windows Vista is arguably (meaning there are people that dispute this) the WORST operating system since Millenium Edition. So keep loading all of the computers with XP until M$ doesn't allow the company to do so and after that start advertising Ubuntu 7.10 systems that are preloaded with lots of good freeware on them and maybe some non-freeware as well. This is a list of software that could be loaded along with the stuff that's included with Ubuntu. I think this would make Linux machines look just as good as (if not better) than Windows:

Default desktop environment: Gnome (included with Ubuntu)
Other desktop environments: KDE, FluxBox,XPDE desktop environment (similar to XP's environment), Xfce, Enlightenment

Freeware games: Cube, Cube 2 (sauerbraten), Armagetron Advance, BZ Flag, Astro Menace, Assault Cube, Nexuiz, Alien Arena, Tremulous, Warsow, Legends(Tribes clone that ROCKS), Wolfenstein Enemy Territory, Neverball / Neverputt, Glest

Non-free software: Pioneer Linux Electricity (Windows Emulator)

Graphics: Kolour Paint

I forgot to mention Savage 2: A Tortured Soul as one of the games that could be loaded onto an Ubuntu rig.

"enoughn with the vista bashing!"

Why? I've used Windows 95, 98, 98 SE, ME, 2000, XP, and Vista. I think I can pretty much say what I want about M$ as long as I'm not giving false information. Also Vista uses more processes to boot up than XP and has a few compatibility problems and ALL Windows OSes have more viruses and security threats than the various Linux distributions.

I think the solution is to offer more computers with Vista pre-installed and just load all the bloatware ever created on it as well, then we'll have a movement!

Agree. Promoted.
Same here. I used Windows 3.1, 95, 98, 98 SE, Me, 2000, XP and Vista.
Vista is an unfinished/slow/bloated product! Period.

"may be its just the system you used it on......"

Or maybe it's the fact that Vista is a heavier OS that uses 60 processes to boot up (twice the amount of XP). I've been using Ubuntu for about a month now and I haven't had to do much of anything to maintain (except download one driver to enable my desktop effects, these things are freakin' cool) I haven't even installed an antivirus or had to defrag my drive. the ONLY problem I had with Linux is that I couldn't get Windows programs to run on it effectively, but then again I never tried any emulators outside Wine (Electricity is supposed to be flawless).

Totally agree, i for one have used VISTA and i LIKE VISTA.
i just do not have it on any system right now because i do not have the money to put it on any computer....

You can't use Unreal Ed 2.0 (UT99's Editor) in Vista...(Unreal games run native in Linux)

I don't think we need to preload bloatware on a Windows PC. (Speaking from experience with Windows OSes) I think the system will do it automatically within one month of installation!

Good point! Forgot its included by default.

As for which system Vista I've used it on, the computers did have the "Vista Capable" sticker

Vista bashing by a small percent of computer users is not something worth exploiting. Sorry.

What are you talking about, Vista is one of the BEST operating systems that I have ever used! I firmly disagree with you so DEMOTED!

Just let the end user decide. The whole Vista thing is a matter of opinion. I have an XPS 420 and Vista runs FLAWLESSLY. Demoted.

Here's my comparison of Windows XP and Ubuntu 7.10, I'm going to post as fairly as I can. (remember this is coming from a geek with a dual-booted system)

Viruses
-----------------------------
Windows: Like a gazillion
Ubuntu: Practically none

Gaming
-----------------------------
Windows: If your a gamer then you probably need this
Ubuntu: Hope you like freeware and bad emulators (actually I heard Electricity is supposed to be flawless, but I've never used it so I can't say anything about it)

Office
-----------------------------
Windows: MS Office is good, but it's technically adware
Ubuntu: Open Office is limited, but it's not adware (I think it's possible to get MS Office to run through an emulator, but I never tried it)

Price Tag
-----------------------------
Windows: $100-$300 per license
Ubuntu: FREE Heck you can even request CDs FREE of charge like I did

Wireless networking
-----------------------------
Windows: Nightmare
Ubuntu: Freakin fast (auto detects no drivers needed!)

System requirements
-----------------------------
Windows: Installs on just about everything
Ubuntu: You need 512MB of RAM or more

Performance
-----------------------------
Windows: Kinda slow to boot and can slow down during updates
Ubuntu: Boots fast and runs smooth

Special effects
-----------------------------
Windows: None that I know of
Ubuntu: all kinds of cool stuff

Internet Browsers (Best that I've used)
----------------------------
Windows: Avant Browser better than Opera
Ubuntu: Firefox runs faster in Linux than Windows, but it's still not quite as fast as Avant. It is however more stable

Updates
----------------------------
Windows: Slows your system down in some cases while its downloading
Ubuntu: System slowdown unnoticable

Initial installation
----------------------------
Windows: NIGHTMARE. You gotta spend hours downloading updates, drivers, utilities, etc.
Ubuntu: So easy my sister could do it. Auto-detects pretty much EVERYTHING and you can run it off the CD before you install it.

lee_stricklin: "Viruses

Define "practically". Ubuntu does have viruses, as it is a Linux distribution: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Linux_computer_viruses_and_worms.

"Special effects

Windows: None that I know of
"

Windows Vista does have some very nice special effects, and the set of special effects is called Windows Aero.

"Office

Windows: MS Office is good, but it's technically adware

Define "technically". Microsoft Office is not adware.

"Performance

Windows is not slow to boot. I have used it and it boots quickly, especially XP.

"M$ fanboys. Unless you can tell me why Windows is better than Linux your pretty much doing nothing spamming the comments section of this idea."

I am not an MS fanboy. I honestly have used Windows (versions 2000, XP, 2003, and Vista) and honestly Vista is one of the best operating systems to have been used by me.

How Windows is better than Linux? In gaming. Linux has never been a popular operating system for gaming, even with free games that were designed for it. In compatibility. Hardware and software that works in Windows might not work in Linux. In software if the application works in Windows but does not work in Linux, then you have to use Wine or another emulator (emulators run horribly, I have used them). In hardware it is pretty easy to find a driver for Windows on the Web site of the manufacturer, whereas it is not so simple for Linux in most cases

Geez. Vista, OSX, Linux are all fine OSs. All a matter of taste, scope of purpose, platform, mission, availability of hardware and software.

Who says you have to use just one?

If and when Linux for PCs becomes more popular, there will be more drivers and software made for it. It's not going become popular by Linux geeks bashing windows. Just extol Linux's strengths and if those strengths are attractive enough to the average user, they'll demand it.

I'm going to demote this idea because it makes a bold unsubstantiated claim that there's an actual anti-Vista movement that can be capitalized on. All conjecture.

I was actually comparing Ubuntu to XP because I have more experience with XP than Vista (But I have used it). Also if you don't believe the latest version of MS Office is adware then read this

http://www.linux.com/feed/126728< for the Hardware problems: My system auto-detected EVERYTHING (just start in safe graphics mode if you need to install this OS) except for my cards capabilities and I downloaded the driver for that through my synaptic package manager (all I had to do was click a button that said mark all upgrades).

If anybody knew anything about the net they would know that most servers are either Linux or Unix based.
If I had to guess, I would say that Wikipedia is on a Debian or Solaris 10 based server.

Yeah. I said Vista is ARGUABLY (means there are people that will dispute this) THE WORST OS since Windows Millenium Edition. I personally think it's the worst OS since Millenium Edition and most of the people I know think so too and want nothing to do with it.

"games for linux? they exist, i was using linux over a month ago, and i didn't find any?"

Some. I mean there are a few major companies like Id and Epic games that have drivers to make there Windows games run on Linux. There's also freeware games (some of which are actually good like Astro Menace, the Cube games, Warsow, and Nexuiz) but other than that there isn't much gaming support for Linux yet.

"lee_stricklin - i understand that linux does have games, as i have used linux before and i don't hate it at all, i prefer windows to my standards and do not insult people for what os they like. that's up to them."

I think I've mostly been on defense this whole war (third comment being one of the exceptions) and I'm not some fanboy that's trying to force Linux on everybody. I am however saying there's a bunch of people that want nothing to do with Vista and that Vista is arguably (meaning there are people that will dispute this) one of Microsoft's worst operating systems ever released.

"as everyone i am guessing knows, every os has had their failures, but it's up to the person themselves to take on which os they prefer, we shouldn't be fighting over a os selection, we should just accept them for what os they like, like you like Ubuntu and i'm cool with that and i like Vista, not sure if you're super cool with that but it's all good with me. people need to get over the fact that people like different things, just like some people like iPods and some people like zunes, get over it people. It's life. :)"

Well said. One of the few decent posts on this thread.
