Dell: Help your fallen Corporate Buddie Billy Gates, Create the Vista Computer!

20 points posted to Dell, Operating Systems, Simplify IT by jorge Feb 28

Dell, your buddy and fellow corporate chum Billy Gates is taking a beating! The news releases on how they helped your other buddy Intel sell a few more chips when they released the "Technology" eater OS Vista and lowered its Spec requirements even though it would not run correctly on their older chipsets isn't helping either one! Of course Dell knew none of this, Dell is innocent, no way would Dell sell a computer that they themselves would know didn't meet the real world requirements of an OS they are pushing on its customers like air to an ex-smoker on a breathing machine.

So help a brother out (corporate chum's) and start only using the latest chipsets on all your products, allow for SLI/Crossfire with the latest Nvidia and ATI Graphics cards if not the new three and four card setups and add several more RAM slots to accommodate at least 16 Gigs, don't forget to allow for multiple core CPU's and multiple sockets (to allow for even more processing power), over clock the living daylights out of it too! Who cares if its hot and sounds like a 747 on take off! Its all about backing your corporate buddies out!

So drop everything you're working on and back the hand that feeds and produce the computer that can run Vista correctly! Well computers, looks like many of the so called "Capable" computers do not meet the specs (the real ones).

I fear building a PC that can run Vista properly would bankrupt Dell and then i would never get my M1330n remote. I must demote and save Dell from it's self! For it's own sake of course. ;o)

No wonder Mr Gates is retiring.

I'm promoting because a PC that can run Vista properly could also cure cancer; solve world hunger; and provide free energy to all.

OTOH - perhaps they'll just redefine the BSOD as "running properly" and then most drivers for most hardware can make Vista achieve proper operation.

Acknowledged aikiwolfie, jervis and jmzx. All valid justifications for your votes.

I wonder why Dell hasn't stepped up to help their partners in crime? (figuratively speaking Dell, its a saying you know)

jmxz brings up a good point, but over all I think that creating a computer that can run Vista properly is a futile task, unless you are willing to pour loads of money into it. There are better ways for Dell to spend money, such as convincing Microsoft to actually write a system that works (yeah right...).

Vista works very well on the listed minimum specs Microsoft put out. And with SP1 it runs even better. I still haven't figured out why people rag on it. Yea, it uses more resources XP, but then again XP used more than 2000, which in turn used more than 98SE, etc, etc. Its called progress. As the OS gets more powerful, it gets bigger and uses more resources. Even Linux does the same thing.
jrg
Feb 28
It's not actually called progress, its generally called feature bloat, and yes even Linux has it (though not as bad as Vista). It's not always bad either, but sometimes I wish for a bare-bones system that worked. I dont need special effects, i need speed :)

@jrg, then get a dos box,
people complain when dosen't include certain features for free in the OS and or people complain they they don't offer as much as a MAC OS.or a GNU/Linux . On the otherhand Microsoft gets sued by other developrs/corporations for stifling competition and abusing their monotpoly when they do offer certain products, features.

e.g. Adobe had an uproar when they wanted to include the ability to print to PDF in office, forcing Microsoft to only offer that feature as a aftermarket addin. GNU/Linux people then brags that OO can print to PDF without having to install additonal software etc... etc..

I promoted because the idea meets the minimum word requirements and I didn't detect any spelling errors.

I'm promoting because of all the creative reasons given for promoting!

But of course jmxz refers to a computer with such specifications running LINUX... not any version of MS WINDOWS... right???
aikiwolfie
Feb 29
Isn't the PDF format the IP of Adobe? I can see why Adobe would allow OO to print to PDF. Adobe to a degree contributes to the open source community and in return benefits from it. I'm not sure what Microsoft contribute to Adobe products.

Well if they actually make such a computer we maybe finally be able to test it properly (Vista) to see if it is indeed an OS. So far its just been reported to be a Memory Hog, Overbloated, Resource Heavy, load heavy, etc... I've yet to hear if its an OS.

@jorge Vista is a great OS that runs more than adequately on most computer made within the last 3 yrs. I have a basic P4 hyperthreader (only a single core) and it runs vista like a champ, in fact vista is only 3 seconds slower to load than XP. I can build anyone who wants one a solid vista machine for $350. I fail to see where the problem with Vista is.

a solid vista machine for $350.......well needing $100 worth of ram to run that resourse hog that does't leave much for the
rest of the inards I'd llike to know where you buy those generic parts!
jorge
Feb 29
@mkmaster78: Explain that to the Microsoft Heads who said their computers were turned to E-mail readers after the upgrade.

@mkmaster78: "I can build anyone who wants one a solid vista machine for $350"

If true, it seems you should be competing with Dell rather than hanging out here.

I still doubt that *anyone* can build a "solid" vista machine, tho.
jorge
Feb 29
Exactly jmxz, the idea is to built a machine to match Vista's needs, so it runs and does not lag when you have the multiple apps open and still have the transparency on and all the widgets and bells on, even the dancing girl widget.

Dell has spoken out in the past about vista problems.

@jervis961: If you read the complete story about the e-mails Dell knew since March of last year! Now they start complaining? Bogus.

Everybody involved with the Vista roll out from Microsoft to the PC vendors to the retailers all knew Vistas specs were set too low and Vista it's self was not ready for market. But all of them in due course played their part in selling crapware to the public. None of them told us. They are all to blame!

@aikiwolfie: Minimum specs required to run Vista, 512MB RAM (1GB recommended) 1.0 GHz processor and DVD player. Computer's specs on which I first tested Vista (back in beta, before it got slimmed down and streamlined for Release) 512MB Ram, 1.6Ghz non-HT processor laptop. A really cheap junker HP laptop. Ran Vista (betas, rc's and release) beautifully, only caveat, no Aero as no WDDM driver was/is available for it. The minimum specs are more than adequate as listed, and if you decide to run vista in "classic" mode, its even faster.
@everyone please stop making broad sweeping statements without any (reported) evidence to back them up, I have made my arguments here listing specs and am willing to post benchmarks if necessary.
aikiwolfie
Mar 3
Why bother with Vista without Aero? That's what the big selling point was. That's like buying a car because you're told it'll do 60 miles to the gallon and then finding out it'll actually only do 10 unless you buy a new engine upgrade.

I don't remember any adverts for Vista "Classic"?

@aikiwolfie: Thats Microsoft for ya! Giving out Works for Free only to limit you and force those stuck attempting to open Office Docs to upgrade.
aikiwolfie
Mar 3
You can't open Office docs with Works? Don't they both come with Word? That's just stupid! They're both made by the same company!

jorge - I said in the past. The article says they complained in private (don't want to make MS mad).

@aikiwolfie..."I'm not sure what Microsoft contribute to Adobe products." They provide the platform for them to charge hundreds of dollars for some of their software.
