Is Out-of-Band monitoring the optimal way to monitor your I/T infrastructure including servers? Out-of-Band management is typically built into the server (usually in a dedicated embedded service processor) thus allowing access to server monitoring features without the need for installing a monitoring agent in the OS. In-Band monitoring using OS-based agents has been another popular way to know the health and status of server hardware. However, installing and managing In-Band agents can be an onerous task for some I/T departments. With the growing adoption of virtualization, In-Band agents can be limited in functionality since they cannot directly access server hardware as in the past. Is this the time for widespread adoption of Out-of-Band monitoring? Dell wants to know your opinion about this topic to help us develop the best features for monitoring our servers.
